Since you’re reading this, I’m holding that you are someone who does your best to be respectful and connected with others. And there may be times when you have a hard time believing in, or having compassion for, yourself.
Today’s Man Alive guest, Daniel Ellenberg, talks with me about the importance of men finding compassion for themselves, as well as bringing it to others. Daniel is an executive and leadership coach, organizational trainer, group facilitator, consultant, advisor, therapist, and researcher. He has coached leaders in companies such as Oracle, Roche Pharmaceutical, ESPN, NASA, Yahoo and more. As a past president of the American Psychological Association division that focuses on men and masculinities, Daniel has been a leader in considering what it takes for men to be healthy and happy, as they contribute to more good in the world.
In our deep and important conversation we discussed…
- What compassion actually is — the yin and yang of it
- How compassion could be the missing link to our survival
- How being relational is not just for women and the importance of creating positive male community
- The impact of a lack of compassion — shut down of the emotional body, callousness, and even cruelty
- How to metabolize and release stressors so you aren’t stuck in a state of stress
- How the “Man Box” relates to compassion
Daniel has been a respected leader in the field of men’s work for decades. When you’re done listening to this episode, check out his upcoming conference from the Men and Boys Compassion Initiative on the Transformational Power of Male Compassion. The link is in the show notes.

Bio:
As a change agent, Daniel occupies different yet related roles: executive and leadership coach, organizational trainer, group facilitator, consultant, advisor, therapist, and researcher. He focuses on helping people build inspiring, successful professional careers and personal lives. He has coached leaders in companies such as Oracle, Roche Pharmaceutical, SoFi, ESPN, NASA, Wikimedia, Symantec, Rakuten, Power Vision, Adobe, RWE, Restoration Hardware, Scopely, Autodesk, Yahoo, Netscape, Genentech, and San Francisco Department of Public Health, as well as many smaller companies—including start-ups.
Daniel’s background in various approaches—including psychology, contemplative practices, neuroscience, leadership development, and philosophy—makes him uniquely qualified to help leaders gain a deeper, more effective understanding both of themselves and those they serve. With his guidance, leaders learn to strategically strengthen relationships and build powerful bonds—creating an environment of trust, honesty, shared understanding, and productivity. He achieves this by helping people resolve common misunderstandings and power struggles to create coherent, well-functioning teams and organizations. People experience greater self-esteem, which positively influences all aspects of organizations—including the bottom line.
An expert in the field of awareness and relationship skills, Daniel has presented at major conferences, businesses, and universities. A published author, he contributed to the book The Communication Path and with his wife, Judith Bell, he co-authored a chapter in Mastering the Art of Success Volume 8 as well as the book Lovers for Life: Creating Lasting Passion, Trust, and True Partnership. He has delivered his successful communications messages on radio, television, and podcasts. His deepest interests are in researching and teaching skills that allow people to thrive both professionally and personally—rather than simply survive.
Daniel is also president of Relationships That Work™ and directs Strength with Heart men’s groups, training, and seminars. He is the immediate past president of the American Psychological Association division that focuses on men and masculinities. His presidential theme was on Creating Connection and Community through Courageous Conversations. He researched how the traditional male role influences relationships, both professionally and personally. He applies this understanding in guiding leaders to be more conscious and impeccable.
Supporting leaders in acquiring new skills of resilience—stability, flexibility, and the capacity to bounce back—informs Daniel’s entire body of work. With Judith, he co-created and delivered a specially designed resilience training program for NASA to help its workforce survive and thrive during a crisis in organizational confidence in the manned space program.
Daniel brings warmth, caring, and humor to his work. At the same time, he challenges people to think outside the box. He believes that people often learn best when they laugh the most-especially at his jokes.
Daniel holds a B.A. in psychology from Boston University and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies where he served on the board for several years. He serves on the board of the Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Practice. He is a trainer for The Human Element organizational training and is the co-creator/co-facilitator of the Resilience Dynamics™ course.
