Many people tell me they struggle to know what to say, on dates and in relationships. They want to be real, but are worried that could come across as too much. They worry their words will reveal they are not smart or interesting enough. They have desires they aren’t sure another person will feel good about.
It’s common to get frozen or tongue tied when you want to communicate something you fear will upset or offend a partner, or will make them want to leave you.
Today’s podcast guests, Patrick Short and Tiffany Crotty, have found a way to make communicating easier, and even more fun. They lead workshops and events that use improv exercises to help people get out of their own way and be more spontaneous and connected. They also perform in a show called Comedy Sportz, which I’ve had the pleasure of attending.
In this interesting and inspiring conversation we discussed…

Having been through divorce myself I know firsthand it’s not an easy road. I also know from experience that it’s even more challenging as a parent.
It’s a time of transition, when everything can seem to be falling apart around and within you.
You may feel exhausted, defeated, hopeless or even want to end your life. I hope not, but I’ve heard this from heartbroken, overwhelmed dads.
I, and today’s Man Alive Podcast guest, want you to know there IS hope! There will of course be challenges, but when you’re open to it life will bring you new people and experiences to support you, even amidst the pain.
Robin Choe has been through his own divorce as a dad and has hosted groups for thousands of divorced dads, with understanding, guidance, and people to lean on. You do NOT have to go through this alone. In fact you actually can’t. Going through divorce is often a time when men realize they can’t heal in isolation.
In our podcast conversation we discussed…

While it’s human to feel angry, unhealthy expressions of anger can create pain and break trust. Instead learn the keys to express anger in healthy ways, to create closeness and connection.

I remember the moment in my late 20’s when something new and unfamiliar happened. I was driving through San Francisco. I can picture the curve in the road that led into Golden Gate park. I was alone in the car, but very animated, talking to myself and waving my arms around.
It suddenly dawned on me that I was angry!
Before that moment, I’d pretty much bypassed my anger. It was like a blocked channel. I would get upset and almost immediately feel sad. There was a lot of anger expressed in my family growing up and I didn’t want any part of it.
But I started to see that without feeling anger, I was also shutting down my passion, creativity, self-worth, determination and more.
As I started to feel anger more often, I quickly realized I needed to express it in healthy ways, so as not to cause pain and break trust in my relationships.
Dr. Susan Campbell, therapist and author of many books, including Getting Real, Triggered to Tranquil, and The Five Minute Relationship Repair, joined me on the Man Alive Podcast to explain what healthy anger actually is, and how to best express and communicate anger.

While I’ve seen men feel more powerful and confident as they embrace “masculine” qualities, I’ve also seen many men suffer and struggle, feeling unmanly or not good enough. This episode explores masculine / feminine dynamics, to see whether and how taking them on can be useful for men.

Today’s episode is a replay from years ago that I still find incredibly helpful today. I went into this conversation with a strong curiosity about whether it’s still useful to talk about a distinction between masculine and feminine.
With humans taking on a wider range of characteristics on the gender spectrum than when I first started coaching, I wanted to explore whether this distinction still supports you to create intimacy and passion. I brought Satyen Raja, a long time coach, to the podcast and in our conversation we cover:
