Many men were not taught how to properly use their masculine power, which is detrimental for them and everyone around them.
When we look at the issues we are facing in the world today, masculinity takes a hard rap. Rather than dissing masculinity, however, I think it is important to recognize that many cultural and community breakdowns are occurring as a result of the lack of mentorship for healthy masculinity. I believe it is time to stop calling masculinity toxic and start cultivating the masculine attributes that support the wellbeing of families, communities, and the earth.
Were you taught to harness your power? To use it with integrity and compassion? Many men were not, and it takes guidance and support for our communities and societies to thrive. Sadly, boys and men haven’t always received the attention or support they have needed to make this happen.
Today’s Man Alive podcast guest is doing incredible work in the field of raising boys to become healthy men and helping fathers with the parallel journey of learning fathering skills AND becoming the man their kids need them to be. Craig Wilkinson is a dad coach and the founder of Father a Nation, an NPO which restores men to true masculinity and authentic fatherhood. In today’s episode we discussed…
- Misconceptions of masculinity
- What strength actually is and how to use it for good
- The six pack of virtues for men
- The two sides of parenting we need to pay attention to
- The father wound’s impact on men and how to mentor boys to become whole
Whether or not you are a dad now, you have been influenced by either having a father or the lack of a father’s presence (physically or emotionally). Craig looks at what it takes to both heal and grow yourself, and be a positive example for the next generations.
If you’re a dad, when you’re done with this one, check out Craig’s first Man Alive episode: 12 Principles to Become a Better Dad.
If you’re not a dad, this episode, on women wanting more than a stereotypical masculine man, is a powerful one for shifting the limited framing of masculinity.
